EL CLÁSICO – MONDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2010

kick off 21.00 local time

Well the day has finally arrived. Catalonia has woken up with a newly elected President, Artur Mas, after his party’s overwhelming victory in yesterday’s vote and now attention will be fully on tonight’s clash of the Titans.

It will be a chilly 8 degrees centigrade in the Camp Nou come kick off time, but bar a slight breeze, the prediction is for dry weather, which will come as a relief to the expected capacity crowd of just under 100,000.

Football matches do not come any bigger than this one, so wherever you may be in the world, get yourself in front of a screen and enjoy ‘El Clásico’.

EL CLÁSICO – MONDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2010

Well it is the final day before the big match and Jose Mourinho has been remarkably quiet leaving Cristiano Ronaldo to do most of the pre-match talking so far for Madrid. Carlos Puyol went in front of the cameras yesterday after his team’s training session and told the press “We will go for the win from the first minute”. The Barca captain wouldn’t be drawn on predicting any score line or commenting on the Madrid manager. “We aren’t playing against Mourinho, we are playing Real Madrid ” he said.

With the Catalan elections taking place today, the game is not commanding the usual focus of attention in Catalonia only 24 hours out, although nearly all the sports channels have got blanket coverage planned for tomorrow and the papers will have some good final headlines up their sleeves.

EL CLÁSICO – MONDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2010

The pre game excitement is beginning to build up and former players from both clubs are being wheeled out to give their opinions. Michael Laudrup recalls his return to the Camp Nou in Madrid colours after 5 years as a Barca player, “for the first time in my life, what happened in the stands influenced my play on the pitch”. Having 98,000 Catalans jeering and whistling every time you touch the ball can have that effect, just ask Luís Figo.

In a more light-hearted look at the match Catalan comic Andreu Buenafuente resurrected the famous world cup octopus Paul to get a prediction. Albeit cooked and in a tin, he plumped for Pep Guardiola’s photo and a Barcelona victory! see video (Spanish Language)

EL CLÁSICO – MONDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2010

Both teams are now concentrating on their preparation for Monday’s match, although Mourinho has attracted some strong critics with regards to his ‘red card’ tactics at Ajax, most notably from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The ‘special one’ is keeping remarkably quiet so far, much to the disappointment of the Spanish and Catalan media. One possible dampener for the match is the weather forecast. We could well end up with a cold, windy and wet night for the big game.
